About Us

The Teens and Theatre Company is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to engage young minds in problem solving skills, to enrich their lives through the literature and history of theatre, to educate them in the arts of theatre, and to enlighten them about the opportunities and people skills that theatre training provides, while entertaining our community by providing a superior theatre experience. We provide an outlet for creative community involvement. Our goal is to reach youth in the Northern Virginia /DC metro area and to create a sense of family in our performing arts community.

Operating Statement

During the academic year, Teens and Theatre Company operates as Homeschool Teens and Theatre Co., or Homeschool TnT Co. During the summer months, Teens and Theatre will operate as Teens and Theatre Repertory Company, or TnT Rep.

The company will perform a variety of classical and modern theatre productions, including comedies, dramas, and musicals from a variety of genres and periods. The emphasis shall be on skill development and training opportunities. Plays and performance pieces will be chosen at the board’s discretion based on artistic merit, age appropriateness, and local community standards as reflected by our society as a whole.

Philosophy

The study of theatre provides homeschooled students with opportunities for personal and academic growth, by creating a forum for exploration of history, language arts, and cultural and social issues in a safe, supportive environment. Our middle school-aged students are taught the basic elements of theatre, and develop their skills with a variety of theatre showcases and performances. At the high school level, students are given opportunities to solve problems and develop their skills while working on pieces from classical to modern, with an emphasis on literary and social merit.

Furthermore, the high school students are given the opportunity to develop their theatrical skills in Improvisational Theatre, Technical Theatre, Dramaturgy, and Writing for the Theatre.

Director

Rip Claassen, Artistic Director TnT Co., has been a local fixture in the Washington theatre scene for many years. Most know him as the Dramaturge at Backstage Inc., Washington's theatre supply store. He has taught theatre and acting at The Institute for the Arts for Fairfax County public schools, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and several other local theatre programs. Rip has costumed for The American Century Theatre and numerous other professional theatre companies, and has directed for Natural Theatricals, as well as several other local venues. Rip founded the Northern Virginia Theatre festival for high schools, and provides coaching to theatre students seeking admission to competitive college theatre programs, Governor’s School, roles in community and professional theatres and other competitive programs. He has recently worked on productions at Howard and American Universities. Next on his schedule: TACT and TnT’s joint summer camp.
